COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Knoxville will open registration for its Angel Tree and Silver Bells programs from Sept. 22 to 26 at the Salvation Army Activities Center, where residents of Knox, Anderson and Campbell counties must present required documents—IDs, birth certificates and income proof—to receive holiday gifts for children and seniors in need.  WVLT 8
  • Herman Lathers—former UT linebacker and community service honoree—was appointed as the first full-time fire chief for the Karns Fire Department in July and now coaches at Powell High School to give back to the community. He wants to be remembered for helping people and follows his lifelong dream of serving others.  6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Football season drives more visitors to Knoxville as hotels and shops fill up with fans coming for Vols games and local events. Visit Knoxville said the city saw 6,755,829 day visitors in 2023 and 7,088,830 just last year—clear proof that fall football boosts local business.  WVLT 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Dollywood Harvest Festival will feature Triumphant Quartet performing from Sept. 15 to Sept. 19 at Dollywood—bringing gospel music to a wide audience. The group, East Tennessee natives with over 20 years together, said the event lets them share their ministry with new fans.  WVLT 8
  • Schulz Bräu Brewing in Knoxville will host its tenth annual Oktoberfest from Sept 20 through Oct 12—featuring a ceremonial barrel tapping at noon to mark the start, live music, a traditional Bavarian breakfast for early ticket holders at 6 a.m., and contests such as dirndl and lederhosen, running of the Wieners, and stein-hoisting for guests of all ages and pets.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • At the Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding — known as STAR — at 11800 US-11 in Lenoir City, children and adults with physical, mental and neurological disabilities rode horses on September 10 as part of a therapeutic program. The program uses horseback riding to offer experiences that help participants face daily challenges.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Six-year-old Dax energizes Hardin Valley Academy football team as their general manager by handing out water bottles, dancing with players and cheering on every play. Diagnosed with autism at age 2, he adds a unique spark on the sidelines while his father coaches the team.  10 News
  • On Friday, Red Bull hosted the Championship Run on UT campus as contestants attempted to run across a slippery goal post over the Tennessee River at Vol Landing—students and influencers took part in a casual round before professional athletes joined the competitive round.  WVLT 8
  • Jeff Hall, a native of Winchester, kicked a game-winning field goal with 10 seconds left in 1995 to help Tennessee beat Georgia 30—27 and fulfill a childhood dream he once drew. His kick set the stage for a career that led him to a national championship and a role with the St. Louis Rams.  10 News
  • Mark Markham has been a devoted season ticket holder for nearly 30 years — a love that shows in his home's Vols decor. He said his uncles started his passion for Tennessee football — a tradition he now shares with his grandchildren.  10 News
  • Lady Vols Softball head coach Karen Weekly signed a contract extension through 2030, with Vice Chancellor Danny White announcing Friday that the move honors her 1,355 wins in 25 seasons. Weekly built a championship program as her team earned six SEC titles and multiple NCAA tournament runs — a record that ranks her among the top coaches nationally.  10 News
