  • Virginia-based BWXT will build two new plants in Erwin and Oak Ridge—part of a $1.5 billion contract to enrich uranium for the military. The company will apply for licenses and hire about 100 new workers at the Oak Ridge site.  Knoxville News Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • Former top aide to a previous Tennessee House Speaker, Cade Cothren, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in prison + a $25,000 fine after a jury found him guilty of defrauding the state in a bribery and kickback scheme involving his political consulting business.  6 News

  • Between 1927 and 1981, the S and W Cafeteria was a busy spot on Gay Street that showed off art deco style and live music while serving meals like fried okra and roast beef.   • Great Smoky Mountains National Park is urging visitors to stop moving rocks after an eastern hellbender was crushed—this warning aims to protect the delicate habitats that shelter salamander nests.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knoxville Police Department named three new horses for its Mounted Patrol Unit after receiving more than 4,500 community suggestions—Ranger is a 4-year-old Morgan/Percheron cross, Cormac is a black and white horse honoring author Cormac McCarthy, and Summitt is a 6-year-old horse named for coach Pat Summitt. Downtown Knoxville Alliance purchased the horses to boost patrol presence downtown and in the Old City.  10 News
  • A report from the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth shows that federal funding cuts to SNAP will cost the state millions to keep providing food help to families. Lawmakers must address an increase in administrative fees starting in 2027 and rising costs expected to exceed $70 million by 2028 — a move that may force more reliance on local food banks.  WVLT 8
