COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans, citizens and officials gathered on September 19 at the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial at World’s Fair Park to mark National POW MIA Recognition Day with taps, wreath laying and a POW MIA Table honoring thousands of missing service members (the ceremony began at 10 a.m.) (Tennessee records show 1390 service members remain unaccounted for).  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Carlos Lopez, a Venezuelan immigrant, became the first Spanish broadcaster for the University of Tennessee during Hispanic Heritage Month — a milestone reflecting his journey from Caracas to East Tennessee — and now provides the Spanish voice for Vamos Vols.  10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • TVA issued a letter of intent to Type One Energy to repurpose the decommissioned Bull Run Fossil plant—closed in December 2023—into a training facility for a new fusion power plant project. Governor Bill Lee and state leaders visited the site on Friday as the partnership is expected to create about 330 jobs and boost energy innovation in Tennessee.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees met Friday to review record enrollment of over 40,000 and nearly $500 billion in donations—evidence of strong support for the university. They also approved an $800k property purchase for Greek Life housing and named new buildings including the $165.5 million Chemistry Building—honoring the Wharton family's contributions.  10 News
  • Knoxville College alumni cleaned Mechanicsville campus on Sept.12 by trimming trees and hanging banners to prepare for the 150th Anniversary homecoming event set for Oct.2—5.  Knoxville News Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trained dog Winnie helped confirm the invasive spotted lanternfly in Knox County when a local resident reported a sighting on Sept. 18—inspectors later found 15 insects on a tree.   • Drivers in Knoxville face delays today as road closures on Peyton Manning Pass and Phillip Fulmer Way—set for the Vol Walk ahead of the Tennessee-UAB game—and on Market Street and Union Avenue for local events slow traffic; TDOT's report shows additional roadwork impacting 24 counties and closures in Sevierville and Maryville that may last for weeks.  6 News
