  • Grace Baptist Church in Newport reopened its doors in May after Hurricane Helene flooded the building on September 27, 2024—volunteers and local companies helped repair the damage with upgrades like reinforced windows and laminated floors.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Schulz Bräu Brewing Company is hosting Knoxville’s annual Oktoberfest — it opened Sept. 20 and will run until Oct. 12.  10 News
  • Grace Baptist Church in Newport has been rebuilt after Hurricane Helene flooded it in September 2024—mud and water severely damaged the building. Volunteers also helped restore the church and the pastor’s home in Edwina near downtown Newport.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Ted Miller, Dolly Parton’s longtime business advisor, was honored with the 2025 Spirit of Tourism Award at a conference in Kingsport—four Sevier County tourism leaders also received awards for their work in boosting Tennessee vacation experiences.  WVLT 8
  • Fender's Farm in Jonesborough reopened on September 20 after a year of rebuilding that followed Hurricane Helene's flood, which caused $2.2 million in damage and destroyed 21 structures. The Fender family worked long hours to restore the 25-year-old agritourism destination—adding new features so visitors would not know a flood had occurred.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers are searching for Ryan Lakes, a 21-year-old man last seen in Nashville on Sept 18 whose vehicle was found in the Big Creek area on Sept 20, and he is described as white, 5’5 tall, weighing 130 pounds and wearing dark gym shorts, a dark T-shirt, brown tennis shoes — a black backpack.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Chloe Peterson collaborated with Metro Drug Coalition to paint a mural on UT’s Rock—highlighting that 76% of students face stress.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park is recovering after extensive flood damage from Hurricane Helene and most campgrounds and trails have reopened, though crews plan up to $35 million in repairs to roads, trails and historic structures—especially on the North Carolina side. Visitors should be cautious as they may encounter hazards like downed trees and deep ditches in areas that are still under repair.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • I-40 is undergoing multi-year repairs after Hurricane Helene’s flooding wiped out parts of the highway along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Crews are installing strong retaining walls and expect North Carolina’s lanes to fully reopen in 2028 while the Tennessee side returns to normal by summer 2026.  Knoxville News Sentinel
