EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Bill Snyder, former University of Tennessee chancellor, died at 93. He left a lasting impact on music—education and support for women in engineering.  10 News
  • Yesterday, Pellissippi State Community College launched its new Aviation Technology program in Blount County at a celebration that honored the first class of students training in aircraft maintenance for jobs across East Tennessee—students like Lindy Futrell expressed excitement for the hands-on training and future opportunities.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ijams Nature Center is sharing the story of Trinity, a female eastern box turtle injured by a lawnmower in 2005 that now has her food cut into smaller pieces, teaching visitors wild animal care tips—helping them understand how human actions affect native wildlife. The center also advises those who find injured animals to follow its wild animal care guidance.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDOT announced that I-40 West will be reduced to one lane at Exit 355 in Roane County at 8 p.m. Friday for repairs on the Lawnville Road bridge—work expected to complete by 6 a.m. Monday; drivers are urged to check the TDOT SmartWay traffic map for updates.  10 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, 47 affordable housing units opened at Bluegrass Landing at 1645 Ebenezer Road in West Knoxville after a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. by DGA Residential and community leaders—offering 24 three-bedroom and 23 four-bedroom units with income-based rents for households earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income.  6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lady Vols guard Ruby Whitehorn rejoined the team after pleading guilty to two misdemeanors for aggravated trespassing and vandalism on Sept. 5—her plea deal requires an 11-month and 29-day probation period and anger management classes while her record will be cleared.  WVLT 8
  • The 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers will travel to Starkville on Saturday to face undefeated Mississippi State in an SEC game scheduled for 4:15 p.m. CT—this contest will test the team’s high-powered offense. Tennessee, which beat Mississippi State 33 to 14 last season, is led by quarterback Joey Aguilar—he has thrown 12 touchdown passes so far.  10 News
