COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater Knoxville is partnering with local leaders to improve access to healthy foods in Knox County’s 18 food deserts—efforts that include redirecting extra produce from community gardens and planning a grant program for new grocery stores opening in 2027. The initiative also tackles challenges like limited refrigeration and transportation that affect residents’ access to fresh food.  WVLT 8
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee reported that local food insecurity has risen by 33% with 213,970 residents affected and 27.3 million pounds of food distributed last year — volunteers contributed more than 32,000 hours to these efforts. The agency asks for more donations and volunteers as winter approaches to help ensure no one must choose between paying heating bills and buying food.  WVLT 8
  • East Tennessee veterans will travel to Washington, D.C. on Honor Air—helping them see memorials built in their honor to recognize their service in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  10 News

  • Country music star Eric Church will perform at Food City Center in Knoxville on March 15th, 2026 with 49 Winchester as part of his expanded Free the Machine Tour. Tickets go on sale on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. and premium members receive early access starting Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.  WVLT 8

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Boyd Center survey shows 44.2% of Tennessee business owners pass some tariff costs to customers and 12.9% pass all costs. Most leaders remain optimistic about the state as 69.4% say Tennessee is on the right track and 70.7% praise the state government’s work—despite concerns over the tariffs.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two East Tennessee educators—Shelby Belcher of Sam Houston Elementary and Crystal Catron of Morgan County Head Start—received $1,000, an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville, and a shopping spree at Lakeshore Learning as part of the Tennessee Early Educator of the Year Awards given Wednesday to honor their contributions to early childhood education statewide.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • ETSU professor Andrew Joyner and campus arborist Travis Watson have released weekly reports that predict a vibrant fall in East Tennessee due to ideal climate conditions—high elevations have already begun to show early color. In Knoxville, experts expect peak foliage around the third week of October while the Smokies will see their best hues in the first week—local forecasts confirm these timings.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • TVA spent nine months cleaning Douglas Lake after Hurricane Helene filled it with thousands of tons of debris, and local residents like Caroline and Marian are now able to swim and paddleboard again. Officials warn that debris could return and ask property owners to help keep the water clear — a step that has revived tourism in the area.  10 News
  • After weeks of controversy, the City of Knoxville and the Emerald Youth Foundation released updated plans for selling part of Chilhowee Park in East Knoxville that now include a 40-year community use restriction—ensuring sports fields remain for recreation and mature trees are preserved. Emerald Youth will offer $913,518 for the parcel while the city commits $10 million for improvements and will form an East Knoxville Advisory Group.  WVLT 8

  • A study from Vanderbilt University Medical Center shows that autism diagnoses in Tennessee have doubled in the past ten years—doctors say better tests, increased awareness, and a true rise in autism contribute to the change. The research highlights a need for more resources, especially for families in rural areas.  6 News
  • Metro Drug Coalition holds an art therapy class every Wednesday at The Gateway in Knoxville where people in active addiction or recovery use painting and discussion to build healthier coping skills. Some paintings are sold to support the program.  10 News
