  • On Friday, community members gathered at the Newport Courthouse—where mayors read a proclamation declaring Sept. 27 a day of resilience and remembrance—to honor lives lost and acknowledge progress after a severe flood. The county also marked Friday night with Shine On and will hold the Roots and Reins Festival today to further celebrate its recovery and unity.  10 News

  • Dan Feehan owns Island Pointe Golf Club by the French Broad River and saw nearly $1 million in damage from Helene while postponing his Mantle Cell Lymphoma treatment to help fix the course. The club will host a golf outing on Oct. 16—raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as Feehan continues his fight.  10 News

  • Greek Fest returns for its 46th year in Knoxville this weekend—bringing local residents together to celebrate Greek culture.  10 News

  • A science experiment at Gibbs High School led to a lockdown after students mixed gaseous chemicals that caused an unexpected reaction—first responders evaluated the classroom while instruction continued normally.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at UT Knoxville warned that cannibal snails—rosy wolfsnails—have been found in Belle Meade and may be spreading through Nashville, threatening native snails that support the ecosystem; 29 snails were collected last Saturday and experts urged locals to report any sightings. This research highlights concerns over the snails’ rapid movement and impact on the area's natural balance.  6 News
  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park reminds visitors to stay at least 150 yards away from black bears and secure food in vehicles—violators risk fines and possible arrest. Bear activity is high through summer and remains active in fall as bears forage for winter supplies.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • I-275 is closed until 6 a.m. Monday as crews replace a bridge over Elm Street and Bernard Avenue in Knoxville—this marks the final weekend of such closures in the area. TDOT warns that lane closures on I-40 in Loudon County, repairs on the Binfield Road bridge, and delays around the Sevierville Convention Center for the Smoky Mountain Truck Fest will affect weekend travel.  6 News
  • On Sept. 16, the Tennessee Supreme Court requested public comment on reforms that may let paraprofessionals or AI chatbots provide legal help—public comments are due by March 16 to guide future changes that could ease rural legal access.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mwelu, a chimpanzee aged 34 years from Zoo Knoxville, underwent a groundbreaking spinal surgery on September 19 to remove a tumor pressing on his spinal cord. The procedure was a collaboration between veterinary neurologist Dr. Talisha Moore and human neurologist Dr. James A. Killeffer at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine — zoo officials said he is recovering well.  6 News
  • The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service warned that some Marketside Linguine With Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce sold at Walmart may be contaminated with Listeria as part of an investigation linked to a June outbreak. Knoxville customers who bought trays with best if used by dates from September 22 to October 01 are advised to discard them or return them to the store.  6 News
