- ➤ Anaika Anderson is opening Mis Amores Bookshop Cafe, Knoxville's first Black-owned coffee shop and romance bookstore dedicated to books for marginalized communities, next Saturday, October 11 at 5331 Central Avenue Pike. She plans to build a safe haven by offering community classes and using coffee proceeds to help pay for school lunch debt. 10 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Eleven people, including Knoxville business owner Yassin Terou, were arrested at a Nakba Day vigil on the UT Law School lawn in May 2024 and later had their charges dropped after completing 100 hours of community service as ordered by the District Attorney. WVLT 8

- ➤ Playwright Lisa Soland has brought her one-woman show about Pat Summitt to Knoxville—she spent six years researching the life and legacy of the famed coach. - ➤ The East Tennessee History Center will host Monsters at the Museum during October, offering interactive stations where families can trick-or-treat and explore local spooky history—covering jack-o-lanterns, broom making, and more. - ➤ UT Knoxville will receive about 15,000 to 18,000 books from Cormac McCarthy’s personal library—donated by his brother Dennis after the author passed in June 2023. The collection will be available for scholars, teachers and students and will join works from other East Tennessee writers in the university’s library system. 10 News

- ➤ SNAP recipients in Tennessee must meet new work rules by Oct. 31—by working, volunteering or proving they cannot work—to keep their benefits, including some seniors, veterans and grandparents caring for grandchildren. Up to 50,000 people may lose help, a change that could affect food banks, school lunch programs and local jobs. 6 News
- ➤ Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs said on Friday that Lumen Flats, a new permanent supportive housing project for youth aging out of foster care, will soon open on the 1500 block of Coleman Drive—18 studio apartments will include wrap-around services such as a $1,000 move-in stipend, on-site therapy, and mentorship support. The development, built by Elmington Capital Group and funded with $1 million in federal HOME funds, will offer residents a pathway to stability and self-sufficiency. 6 News
- ➤ Great Smoky Mountains National Park has reopened all areas today thanks to contributions from state, county, and local groups and nonprofit Friends of the Smokies — a plan that will keep the park fully staffed until Oct 10 to maintain visitor services and wildlife safety. - ➤ City officials and Mayor Indya Kincannon joined Pleasant Ridge Elementary students on Oct. 3 to break ground on an $18.9M project to widen Pleasant Ridge Road — adding sidewalks, turn lanes, marked crossings and a greenway as part of the Vision Zero initiative — with construction set to finish in 2027. 6 News
- ➤ Sevier County gave TORG 120 days to submit a plan for the Smokies Stadium property at exit 407—officials said the company beat two other bidders by proposing to reuse the old stadium to keep it a community landmark. WVLT 8
