  • Tim Surrency has worked 20 years as an overnight security guard at WBIR—patrolling parking lots and watching cameras to keep Knoxville safe—while many sleep. He said night work gives him focus—he overcomes challenges from cerebral palsy—and he remains a dedicated part of the community.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Data from the Tennessee Dept. of Education shows that most Education Freedom Scholarships were given to students in urban areas, with Knoxville receiving 2,557 vouchers and strong numbers in Memphis, Nashville and Chattanooga — more vouchers went to high-income suburbs like Franklin, Brentwood and Belle Meade than to lower-income parts. Gov. Bill Lee said nearly 42,000 applications were received and he will ask lawmakers to add more funds for future scholarships.  6 News

  • TDOT crews are blasting and removing rock on a slope near Alcoa Highway today—causing road closures for commuters.  10 News
  • The Great Smoky Mountains National Park fully reopened yesterday during the government shutdown—local and state leaders provided funding and support that allowed visitors to access reopened centers.
