ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Operations resumed Saturday morning at Great Smoky Mountains National Park after a shutdown as local and state leaders, Friends of the Smokies and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians secured funding - over $60,000 daily was provided to keep staff and essential services operating for the busy season. 6 News
- ➤ Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park reopened during the shutdown thanks to a coalition of state and local groups (Tennessee paid $80,000 while other partners contributed about $45,000) and visitors drove the 11-mile scenic loop on Oct.4 while the park will remain open until Oct.10. - ➤ Karyn Adams is running for City Council in District 1, as Inside Tennessee reported on Oct. 5. 10 News
- ➤ Today is the final day to register to vote in Knoxville’s general election, where voters will choose five City Council seats in districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 and vote on a sales tax increase to fund road paving, sidewalks and affordable housing projects. Voters in District 5 will cast their ballot only for the tax increase, and early voting will begin October 15 with election day scheduled for November 4 — city officials urge everyone to register promptly. 6 News

- ➤ The National Kidney Foundation’s Memphis Kidney Walk was held at Sequoyah Hills Park on Oct. 5 to raise awareness for kidney disease—residents learned about kidney health during the event. WVLT 8
