COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knox Area Rescue Ministries is planning to open a shelter for women and children on a nearly six-acre site—approved by the Knox County Planning Commission—after a 104 percent rise in demand, with renovations beginning soon so the facility can help more than 200 families and open in two years.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • An Iowa family filed a lawsuit against Roblox alleging that their 13-year-old daughter was groomed on the platform and later taken from her grandmother’s home to Jefferson County — where the alleged groomer, 37-year-old Martin Amaya Sandoval, repeatedly raped her and now faces four counts of aggravated statutory rape with a $500,000 bond — raising concerns over online child safety.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Knoxville native Emily Ann Roberts released her EP 'The Memory Lane' on October 3 and signed a record deal with RECORDS+Sony Nashville as she explained her music comes from her east Tennessee childhood while performing at Dollywood on Wednesday. She said fans will soon hear her songs on the radio.  WVLT 8
  • Stella Parton, sister of country star Dolly Parton, said on Facebook that she would not give out more family details after a social media post raised concerns about Dolly’s health. Dolly postponed her Las Vegas residency and said she will keep working as long as she is given privacy (she is being treated for kidney stones).  WVLT 8
  • A new episode of 9-1-1 Nashville featuring Knoxville premieres tomorrow, and local fans can look forward to the hometown connection. Creator Ryan Murphy—who once interned at the News Sentinel in Knoxville—adds a personal touch to the show.  10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Knoxville will host filming of '9-1-1: Nashville' this fall, making it the largest production to visit the area and sparking hopes for new jobs and tourism—Visit Knoxville officials said production projects like this could open doors to future opportunities. The film office and local leaders expect the project to help boost the local economy.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park will remain open during the government shutdown as Sevier County + partner communities signed an agreement with the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service to fund it until Oct. 19.  WVLT 8
  • Knoxville voters will soon choose five city council members and decide on a local sales tax increase that would raise the rate from 2.25% to 2.75% to fund planned projects — early voting starts on October 15 and runs through October 30 with the Knoxville Expo Center opening for early votes on October 20 due to a scheduling conflict.  6 News
  • A new Sevier Avenue parking project is being upgraded by the city with lighting and a crosswalk to a continuous sidewalk on the north side of Island Home Avenue—helping serve nearly 80 parking spots while paving is scheduled for Nov. 7th.  10 News

  • Dolly Parton addressed health rumors today by saying 'I ain’t dead yet' in a video explaining that recent procedures kept her at home. The country music star noted that her treatment may delay her Las Vegas residency — she plans to return to work soon.  WVLT 8
  • TennCare's free diaper program has given over 37 million diapers to more than 75,000 children on Medicaid by offering 100 free diapers a month to kids under two—helping families save money. A Knoxville mom said the program is a lifesaver that eases her family's tight budget.  10 News
