  • Knoxville and East Tennessee host many fall events this month as Halloween nears—WVLT News highlights community celebrations and activities in October.  WVLT 8

  • Mast General Store on Gay Street is hosting a Big Orange Pep Rally that will offer sales on Vols gear and raffles—visitors can join the celebration today.  10 News
  • A foundation bought eight properties in Maplehurst to create an innovation district proposed by the University of Tennessee—this tech hub project will boost local business growth.  10 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Knoxville’s Neyland Stadium will host country star Luke Combs on May 2, 2026 — a move that continues the trend of major concerts on campus after previous record-setting shows. University students say the event could open the door to more live music acts at the stadium.  WVLT 8
  • Country music star Luke Combs will perform at Neyland Stadium on May 2 as part of his 'My Kinda Saturday Night' tour. Tickets go on pre-sale October 15 at 10 a.m. with general sale October 17 and fan-club advance access October 14 at 10 a.m.—all details set for fans in the area.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South College hosted an event called 'Grey’s for a Day' to show how surgical technology students train for real surgery—the event was held ahead of the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season premiere. One student said the program inspired her to pursue a career in medicine, and the clinical coordinator noted that in the operating room, the focus is solely on the patient.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fall brings wildfire season and open burning back to East Tennessee as Rural Metro Fire urges residents to follow permit rules from October 15 to May 15—burn only natural brush, clear vegetation around homes, and never leave fires unattended with a hose nearby. The fire department advises making homes firewise to protect property and reduce the risk of wildfires.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knox County government is planning to install a memorial honoring fallen deputy Tucker Blakely on the corner of W. Emory Road and Brickyard Road—a tribute to his service on duty. Officials including Mayor Glenn Jacobs, Sheriff Tom Spangler, and his wife Katarina Blakely will unveil it at 2 p.m. on October 14.  WVLT 8
  • Tennessee lawmakers are working to address a TBI forensic evidence backlog caused by staffing shortages and limited law enforcement investment—officials say that new measures will be needed to clear pending cases.  10 News
  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park remains open during the shutdown and will stay open through Oct. 19 after an agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior and the National Park Service—officials urge visitors to follow hiking safety guidelines during the peak season.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Knoxville’s Ashlee Crouse turned her life around after addiction by finding faith—she opened The Mustard Seed Studio to photograph families and individuals in recovery. She now works with the Metro Drug Coalition to help others find hope and purpose.  10 News
  • Southern Comfort Restaurant in Gatlinburg received a failing health grade of 68 on its inspection due to six critical violations including improper dishwasher water temperature & unsafe food handling practices. The restaurant corrected these issues and earned a score of 92 on the re-inspection.  6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mast General Store is hosting a Big Orange Pep Rally to get local fans excited for the home football game between the Vols — Razorbacks this weekend.  10 News
  • Tennessee and Arkansas will meet this weekend in their 21st series as the Volunteers lead the rivalry. In 2002, a game that went into six extra periods at Neyland Stadium—Tennessee's longest—left a lasting mark on local football history.  10 News
