  • Today, Covenant Health Park opens in Old City as a new multiuse stadium designed by GEM Associated Architects, a joint venture between local firms Design Innovation Architects and BarberMcMurray—its design focuses on careful material choices including gray seats picked from 12 samples and a yellow pine roof from Alabama that cut costs. The venue has a 360-degree concourse for fans and uses existing downtown parking, while Knoxville Area Transit will provide free shuttles on game days—promising easier access to the new facility.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • A Knoxville mother is asking for help after her 8-year-old son was hit by a car on North Broadway near Atlantic Avenue last week—he remains in critical condition while she stays at the hospital with him and cares for her 10-year-old daughter.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville Police arrested 21-year-old Jaylyn Hudson and 19-year-old Jayden Conwell on Monday in connection with the March 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Ayden Russo outside a home on Louise Avenue—both are charged with first-degree murder.  6 News
  • Knoxville police charged 21-year-old Jaylyn Hudson and 19-year-old Jayden Conwell with first-degree murder for the death of 16-year-old Ayden Russo, who was shot in a backyard on March 24 in the 2500 block of Louise Avenue—both suspects were detained Monday after questioning with help from the county sheriff’s office.  WVLT 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • After journalist John Gunther once called Knoxville 'ugly' in 1947, local community members created the Dogwood Trail in 1955—an effort that later grew into the Dogwood Arts Festival set to run April 25-27.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The IRS has postponed tax deadlines to Nov. 3 for Tennessee taxpayers affected by severe storms—tornadoes and flooding—in early April. Taxpayers with individual and business returns and related payments originally due on April 15 now have extra time to file.  WVLT 8
  • A report from UT’s Appalachian Justice Research Center said high rents and crowded housing have led to more evictions in Knox County — over 350 households were on the eviction docket in March as rents rose 34% since 2019. The report urged more funding for Legal Aid of East Tennessee’s eviction prevention program, which hired extra staff with federal funds set to expire in May.  10 News
